Overview of First Ever Underwater Metro in India
The Indian Metro and Indian Railway are making a significant contribution to history with the construction of the first underwater metro route in India. This is the first time in the country that metro rails will run under water. For the east west corridor of the Kolkata Metro a significant portion of the route is developed under the Hooghly River. From Esplanade to Howrah Maidan the underwater corridor will span. It will be a 4.8 km long stretch from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan and the route from Sealdah to Howrah Maidan is all set to be operational.
The stretch from Salt Lake Sector V had been operational since 2022 and now the stretch will cover the route from Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah Maidan. With the new inauguration and functioning, 3 new metro stations are opening namely Mahakaran, Howrah and Howrah Maidan. The Howrah metro is also the deepest station in the whole of India as well.
The total cost of this east west corridor had touched 8600 crores. The major attraction of this project is of course the 520 meter underwater tunnel. Moreover the underground section is 10.8 km long here. Also there are already comparisons of this route with the Eurostar that connects London to Paris. The underwater section however will have twin tunnels here along with 1.4 meter wide concrete rings. Very recently in 2023 December the Kolkata Metro also added some blue light throughout the underwater section along with other lights. The total stretch of the route in the east west corridor stretched up to 16.6 km at present. For the first phase there are only elevated stations that start from Salt Lake Sector V. The elevated section is 5.8 km and includes 6 stations. These are Salt Lake Sector V station, Karunamoyee station, Central Park station, City Centre station, Bengal Chemical station and Salt Lake Stadium station. Moreover from the Phool Bagan station the underground section starts and in the first phase there are two more stations, the Phool Bagan station and the Sealdah Station. These two stations cover a distance of 3.6 km.
Furthermore in Phase II there are 4 stations namely Esplanade, Mahakaran, Howrah and Howrah Maidan. This is the section that is soon to be operational and the area it covers is 7.2 km. Therefore in total the underground section is 10.8 km.

Sealdah to Howrah Metro Time Table
The Sealdah to Howrah Metro time will be like any other metro stations from 6 am in the morning to 10 pm at night. The frequency of trains will be about 5 minutes during the peak hours and during the regular hours it will be 10 minutes.

There is a fixed ticket price for all trains and distances of Kolkata metro. And this fee structure is determined on the basis of the distance covered. So it is
- Up to 2 km the fare is Rs. 5
- 2 km to 5 km the fare is Rs. 10
- 5 km to 10 km the fare is Rs. 15
- 10 km to 16.5 km the fare is Rs. 30
There are tickets for the return journey as well which is double of what it is for a one way journey.

Furthermore there are monthly and annual passes available as well.
It is Rs. 1000 for Ordinary Pass, Rs, 600 for a Ladies Pass and Rs. 500 for a Senior Citizen Pass. Also for an annual pass the fare is Rs. 12, 000 for an Ordinary Pass, Rs. 7, 200 for a Ladies Pass and Rs. 6, 000 for a Senior Citizen Pass.
